So you’ve decided to do a boudoir session — first of all, I am so here for it. Whether you’re doing it as a gift, a personal milestone, or simply to celebrate yourself, boudoir photography is one of the most empowering experiences you can have. But before you hit “book now” on anyone’s website (including mine!), there are some important questions you should be asking.
As a boudoir photographer based right here in Richmond, Virginia, I’ve had countless consultations with women who weren’t sure what to look for — or who’d had a disappointing experience somewhere else because they didn’t know what to ask upfront. This post is here to change that.
Here are the 5 questions every woman should ask before booking a boudoir session.

1. What’s Actually Included in the Session Fee?
Boudoir pricing can vary wildly, and it’s easy to fall in love with a price tag that doesn’t include what you think it does. Before you book, ask specifically whether the fee covers hair and makeup, a wardrobe consultation, a set number of edited images, digital files, printing rights, or an album. Knowing what’s included (and what’s an add-on) saves you from sticker shock later.
2. How Do You Help Clients Feel Comfortable?
This might be the most important question on the list. Boudoir is an intimate, vulnerable experience — and the right photographer will have a clear, intentional process for helping you feel at ease from the moment you walk in. Ask how they guide posing, how they handle nerves, and whether you’re allowed to bring a friend for support. If they can’t give you a real answer, that tells you something.
3. What Is Your Retouching Style?
Retouching in boudoir is a deeply personal thing. Some photographers do heavy skin smoothing and body reshaping; others prefer a more natural, luminous look. Neither is wrong — but you want your photographer’s editing philosophy to match your vision.
4. How Do You Handle My Privacy?
Please, please ask this one. Will your images ever be shared on social media, used in marketing materials, or featured in a portfolio — without your explicit permission? A professional photographer will have a clear policy and be happy to explain.
5. Do You Have Experience Shooting My Body Type and Skin Tone?
A truly skilled boudoir photographer knows how to work with every body — different curves, different skin tones, different sizes. The right lighting, angles, and posing make all the difference, and that knowledge comes from experience. Don’t be shy about asking this directly. A good photographer will welcome the question.
6. How Should I Prepare, and What Should I Bring?
A great photographer will set you up for success before you ever step in front of the camera. Ask about what to wear, skincare tips, things to avoid (like trying out a new spray tan artist the day before your shoot — trust me!), and whether they provide a prep guide. The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel on session day.
